Brent In Africa
We moved to Africa because my Father was a missionary or wanted to become one. At the time he was a preacher in Myrtle Point Oregon.
He heard of a filler position for a missionary in Zambia, he would be working with the Zambians on a Bible school. We left for Zambia in 1987 and I had just turned five a week before. Once in Zambia we discovered that the missionary we were filling in for was supporting the bible school out of his own pocket which was not what was supposed to be happening. At the end of a year the missionary we were filling in for was fired and we ended up staying in Zambia two more years. In which time we adopted my little sister Maria and I started schooling.
In 1990 we returned to the states for my dad to gather support and we ended up staying a year in Canyonville Oregon.
Upon our return to Zambia we discovered that things were not well. A group of men in the church were starting a money and power hungry group, somehow they had gained support with the government and they were now targeting missionaries. Their demands were simple we had to have our supporting money go through them and they would allocate how much we got or we left the country. This forced many missionary groups out of the country.
We left in late 2003 for South Africa they wanted my Father to start a Bible College. We moved to the town of Kimberley because we were a interracial family and it was one of the more welcoming towns. Nelson Mandela was just released from prison and the country was still tense. When we moved into our neighborhood our neighbors on all three sides moved out.
My Father and Mother were able to vote in South Africa's first democratic election and my father got the Bible college started. It is called the South Africa Bible Institute or SABI for short.
I went to high school at Kimberley Boys High School and also took extra classes at the Kimberley Art Academy.
