Play Music"Script" "Song One" "Song Two" "Song Three" "Song Four" "Song Five" "Song Six" "Song Seven" | My name is Brent Caulley I am a student at LCC getting a degree in Multi Media. I am a American citizen but spent my childhood in Africa. I am writing to you about a script I have written for a Musical production. The play is titled “J@$#s, Mary & Joseph (What is going on?)”. In essence it is a modern retelling of the nativity, or the birth of Christ set around last November’s election. The story is told by a Christian college student who is the narrator in the production who is faced with the dilemma of picking a political side which is hard for him because he sees a little of Christ in both sides. The Narrator has to deal with some of the anti Christian sentiment that leads him to clear the air. I am use the play to compare the political state of Israel at the birth of Christ to the political and moral state of America today. The Idea that is given is of an old country from a rich past that includes a: spiritual, moral and ethical code, but is now on the brink of change. A new group of people that live by the laws of science and believe technology and knowledge are all we leave behind (Romans). The play is most of all a Love story between Mary and Joseph. Two average American college kids in a modern relationship. Mary because of her red state or conservative upbringing has been faced with a new way of thinking by college and holds on to very little from her parents guidelines, except she is waiting to have sex until after she is married. Joseph because of his blue state upbringing is waiting to get married until he is financially able to provide for a family and begins to push Mary into a physical relationship. Now with both of them at the end of their third year of college, Joseph begins to be impatient, as men do and their relationship begins to suffer. When their relationship is at its lowest point Mary reaches out to her unknown God for answers and help. The help she receives is not what any one would respect as very helpful for a couple of college kids. Mary now has to save her relationship carrying a stranger’s baby. Joseph will have to sacrifice his dreams and aspirations of becoming successful for a girl that now has a reputation of cheating on him. Mary and Joseph receives help in the form of the Angel Gabriel, a black Rastafarian based off of the pop artist Wyclef Jean. The music of the play is based off of popular pop music of the era featuring artist like: the Black Eyed Peas, Wyclef Jean, Lauren Hill and Fred Hammond. There are four main characters: Mary, Joseph, Gabriel and the Narrator. There are three smaller speaking roles: College Professor, Elisabeth and Joseph’s Friend And there are eight singing and dancing parts with four girls and four boys.
I try to keep the play devoid of religious jargon or popular Christian images and the word Jesus or God will not be said. The main purpose of the play is for the young Christian narrator to clear his name of either side but say he follows what happened that night. That is all I try to do with this play is to ask not to be grouped with every bad Christian decision and political action. I want to say that I am at least neither red nor blue but purple. I would like a college or school to put on the musical because that is the age group I would like to reach as a Christian college student. If you are interested in taking a look at my script I would be happy to bring you a copy, as well as a copy of the music that will be in the play. I thank you for taking the time to read my message. |
